WDD 430: Web Full-Stack Development

Essential JavaScript

A foundational understanding of essential JavaScript makes developing with a declarative library like React much easier and more intuitive.

Functions

JavaScript functions are blocks of code designed to perform a particular task. They are executed when invoked (called).

Arrow Functions

Arrow functions provide a shorter syntax for writing functions in JavaScript. They are often used for concise function expressions.

Objects

Objects in JavaScript are collections of key-value pairs. They are used to store and manage data in a structured way.

Arrays and Array Methods

Arrays in JavaScript are used to store multiple values in a single variable. Array methods allow you to manipulate and interact with these arrays effectively.

Destructuring

Destructuring in JavaScript allows you to unpack values from arrays or properties from objects into distinct variables.

Template Literals

Template literals in JavaScript provide an easy way to create multi-line strings and embed expressions within strings using backticks (`) and ${} syntax.

Conditional (Ternary) Operator

The ternary operator in JavaScript is a concise way to perform conditional expressions. It takes three operands: a condition, an expression to execute if the condition is true, and an expression to execute if the condition is false.

ES Modules and Import / Export Syntax

ES Modules (ECMAScript Modules) allow you to organize and reuse JavaScript code across different files. The import and export syntax is used to share code between modules.

Promises and Async / Await

Modern React and Next.js applications rely heavily on asynchronous operations such as API calls and database requests. Understanding promises and async/await helps you write cleaner, easier-to-debug code for asynchronous workflows.

Spread and Rest Syntax

Spread and rest syntax are used constantly in React for copying objects and arrays, passing props, and updating state without mutation.

Common Array Iteration Methods

Array iteration methods are foundational in React for rendering lists, transforming data, and filtering UI output.

Activity Instructions

Use this page as a focused prep checklist before continuing to the React activities.

AI Support: You are encouraged to use AI as a tutor to summarize these JavaScript concepts, create quick examples, and explain confusing syntax. Follow the WDD 430 AI Policy: use AI to learn, but understand every line of code you submit.

  1. Review each topic and bookmark the MDN page for quick reference.
  2. For each section, write one short code sample in your notes (or a practice file) showing how the concept works.
  3. Confirm you can explain these in your own words before moving on: map(), destructuring, template literals, and async/await.
  4. Share one concept you found most useful in the Week 01 Forum in Microsoft Teams.

Submission

After completing all the learning activities for the week, return to Canvas and submit the W01 Learning Activities quiz.
