WDD 430: AI Policy
Overview
The BYU-Idaho Software Development program encourages students to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a learning assistant and as a tool of software development. Please see the overall Software Development AI Policy.
Policy
In this course, you are welcome and encouraged to use AI to help write code for your projects. You must understand every line of code that you submit. This reflects how AI is used in professional development: teams value speed, but they also expect developers to verify and explain their code. Submitting code you do not understand can introduce bugs, vulnerabilities, or performance issues.
To stay closely aware of the code you are writing and generating, prefer VS Code inline suggestions and line-by-line AI help instead of asking AI to generate or update many files at once.
As your understanding grows, you can gradually use AI for larger code segments, as long as you still review, test, and fully understand what you submit.
In summary:
- ✅ Use AI as a learning assistant or tutor to understand course concepts.
- ✅ Use AI to help you write and debug code.
- ✅ Understand, test, and be able to explain every line you submit.
- ✅ Prefer line-by-line support, especially when learning new topics.
- ❌ Do not submit complete files or large AI-generated sections that you cannot explain.
- ❌ Do not use AI to answer quiz questions.
