Competency Pass-Off
Purpose
The pass-off is a short meeting with the instructor or TA where you show you can perform, explain, and adapt an entire competency. Contracts and peer reviews focus on individual slices. The pass-off is where you bring those slices together.
Contract → Peer review (each slice) → Instructor/TA pass-off (whole competency) → Tracker updated
Before you request a pass-off
Check every item:
- Every slice of the competency has been reviewed with a peer (see Peer Contract Review).
- Your review records show no unresolved gaps, or you have addressed them.
- Your work runs and you can show it.
- You can explain the important decisions from every slice in your own words.
- You have tests or verification results from across the competency.
- You can describe at least one challenge and how you solved it.
- Your Competency Progress Tracker is up to date.
What to bring
- Links to the contracts and review records for each slice
- The working artifacts, pages, or code
- Tests, screenshots, or notes that verify the results
- One challenge, one success, and one important decision from across the slices
What happens in the meeting
The instructor or TA may ask you to:
- connect two or more slices in the same workflow,
- explain the relevant code or design,
- demonstrate representative behavior,
- show tests or verification results,
- describe a challenge and its solution,
- make a small change,
- predict what happens in an edge case, or
- diagnose a deliberately introduced small problem.
Questions stay connected to the competency and the slices you reviewed. The goal is not to surprise you with unrelated material.
Possible results
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Passed | You demonstrated and explained the competency and handled the variation. |
| Pass with next step | The competency is demonstrated, and there is one small follow-up to complete. |
| Not yet | A slice or a connection between slices is missing. Choose the smallest next step and schedule another attempt when ready. |
“Not yet” is useful feedback, not a failure of the course.
After the meeting
- Record the result in your Competency Progress Tracker.
- Write down the next step.
- Use that evidence to choose your next contract.
