W05 Team Activity: Practice General Interviewing Skills
For this activity, you will need to meet with your gathering group for a one hour synchronous meeting.
Overview
Purpose:
- Practice general interviewing skills.
- Help others improve their general interviewing skills.
- Get ideas of how to improve your general interviewing skills by watching others.
Being able to collaborate with others is an essential skill in any organization. It is also a BYU-Idaho Learning Outcome: Skilled Collaborators.
Meeting Agenda
Use the following agenda to guide your meeting.
Begin with Prayer
Discuss General Interviewing Skills (5 minutes)
As a group, discuss the following questions:
- What is the STAR model and why is it useful? What do each of the letters stand for?
- Why kinds of questions is the STAR model useful for answering?
Practice (40 minutes)
For this step, take turns using the STAR model by answering the following questions. Each person in the group should respond to each question.
If someone is having a hard time coming up with a situation they could discuss, as a group, see if you can help them think about and find a possible situation to discuss.
Answer the following questions:
- Can you think of a time you made a mistake at work. How did you handle the situation?
- Can you give me an example of a time that you had to develop a new skill? How did you go about it?
- Tell me about a time at work that you had to work through conflict with others.
- Tell me about a time when you ran into technical problem in a project you worked on.
The STAR Model
For each question, remember to highlight the following:
- Situation
- Task
- Action
- Result
Conclude (1 minute)
- See if anyone in the group has any questions about the remaining assignments for the week.
- Decide on a person to be the lead student for the next meeting.
