Transcript: Reaching out for an informational interview
Now that you have completed the Employer List, let’s reach out to some of those people so we can start doing informational interviews! We showed you how to find them through LinkedIn and BYUI Connect in Activity 1.
Contact 5 companies at a time as you work through your list. We recommend starting with companies that have employees who are BYU-Idaho alumni.
If the company you want to work for does not have any alumni, that’s okay. Reach out to someone in the area you are interested in working in and start building a relationship.
After selecting those 5 companies, find someone you can talk to. Reach out on LinkedIn, BYUI Connect, or email to ask for an informational interview.
Here is a good message example.
“Hello Sarah,
My name is Samuel, and I am a student at BYU-Idaho. I saw that you are currently working for Pfizer, and I would love to ask some questions about your position and career.
I am sure you are busy, so I would not plan on taking more than 15–20 minutes of your time.
Thank you,
Sophia Williams”
Now go ahead, send those messages.
