Transcript: Tips for Creating and Employer List

Sometimes it can be tricky to come up with 40 potential employers for your employer list. But don’t worry, we’ve got a few tips to help you succeed in your search!

You don't need to prioritize the employers on your list yet. And you also don’t have to be 100% committed to all the companies on your list. This list is just for you to brainstorm and find more companies as potential options for you.

This approach was inspired by “the 2-hour job search” by Steve Dalton.

A good place to find companies for your list is to use job boards like Handshake, LinkedIn, Indeed, and Glassdoor.

To begin, go to byui.joinhandshake.com. Under the Employers section, you will find filters in several different categories like who you follow, location, size, and industry.

You can also check on Indeed.com. Search for current job postings in your desired industry. Write down the companies that appear You don’t need to write down the open positions yet.

Next, try a quick Google search for the job position you are interested in. Google will search for open positions from all job board platforms and show you everything on one page.

Click “more jobs” to view the whole list. Select your desired location to display a list of companies in that area or select "anywhere" to show more companies if location is not as important right now. That will allow you to see many different options quickly. Write down the companies that appear.

LinkedIn is also another great option to help you find potential employers.

Start by looking up one of your dream companies on LinkedIn. Scroll down and you will find a column on the right that says, “Pages people also viewed”. These are often companies in the same industry that other people have viewed or interacted with. You can look at their pages and write some of those down.

You can also go to the BYU-Idaho LinkedIn page. Click on the alumni tab. Search for your major or field of interest in the search bar. Scroll down to see where a lot of the alumni work.

LinkedIn also has an algorithm to suggest potential companies to you based on the information you inserted on your profile and what you searched previously in the Jobs tab. In the Jobs tab, LinkedIn creates a sub-section called Recommended for You. There you can find more options of lesser-known companies that fit your criteria.

Also on the Jobs page, you can check out “More Jobs for You”.

Another resource is BYU-I connect. Similarly to Handshake, Indeed, and LinkedIn, you can find a list of companies that are hiring and their positions. Click on the “Opportunities” tab and select the filters that best apply to you. You can also use the search bar to find a specific position of your interest. Under the “Explore the Community” tab, you can find a list of alumni and where they work.

These tips will surely help you find that Employer List quickly and boost your chances of finding the job of your dreams!

Good luck on your employer list!
