CSE 300: Professional Readiness

W01 Assignment: Prepare Employer List

Overview

Now that you have learned ways to explore possible employers in your area, you will prepare a list of possible employers to contact. During this course you are expected to conduct at least three informational interviews with some of these employers. This week you will brainstorm possible options of people or companies to consider, then, next week, you will contact some of them.

For this assignment, you need to identify at least 40 possible employers or people. You do not necessarily need to know people at these companies. Similarly, they do not necessarily need to be hiring. This is a brainstorming exercise so include as many opportunities and people as you can.

It is ok if not all of these companies are in your area, but try to include at least some local companies or people.

Instructions

Complete the following:

  1. If you have not already downloaded it, please download the employer list template. This template contains the following columns:
    • Company: The name of the company.
    • Location: Where the position is located (including remote).
    • Alumni work there: Include if you know any BYU-Idaho Alumni or other personal contacts who work there.
    • Positions available: Indicate if you know if there are positions available there and how relevant they are to you. (Scale of 1–3, with 1 meaning that you are unsure of available positions, 2 meaning that there are positions, but not as relevant to you, and 3 meaning that there are positions available which are very relevant to you.)
    • Motivated to work there: Indicate how motivated or excited you are to work there. (Scale of 1–5, with 5 meaning you are very motivated.)
  2. Use the ideas in this week's learning activity to identify and fill out at least 40 employment options.

    Spend Time on This Research

Please note: This step may take a significant amount of time. Remember that the purpose here is for you to do research that will be helpful in your job search, not simply to "get an assignment done." Take the time you need to make sure this is meaningful to you.
